At 7:05pm, the Philadelphia Flyers will face the New York Rangers in their first of the back-to-back rookie series at the PPL Center.

Before the 2024 Flyers Rookie Camp, the last time players were on the ice in any capacity was at the 2024 Flyers Development Camp. Then, Matvei Michkov had just agreed to a 3yr/$2.85mil entry-level contract, and Jett Luchanko was the 13th overall pick four days earlier at the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.

Yesterday, Michkov and Luchanko began to develop chemistry on the ice. On the rush, both playmakers created space with their passing and flexed their agility and speed. Oliver Bonk also joined, accepting bumper passes from Michkov in what looks like a future powerplay trio with Luchanko.

Philadelphia had a morning skate from 10:30am to 11am. Between the end of the morning skate and the start of the first of two rookie games versus the Rangers, Ian Laperrière will consult with the rest of the team staff regarding the lineup. Many eyes will be on players like Michkov, Luchanko, and Bonk. Another player who commands attention will be Emil Andrae.

Morning Skate

Carter Sotheran was on the ice during the morning skate. It was a welcome sight to see after learning about his Wolff-Parkinson-White flare-up. Denver Barkey was not.

The powerplay units were running during the morning skate:

PP1: Michkov, Luchanko, Bonk, Andrae, and Santeri Sulku
PP2: Ethan Samson, Massimo Rizzo, Samu Tuomaala, Alexis Gendron, Josh Zakreski

Jon-Randall Avon and Elliot Desnoyers will feature on the penalty kill. Desnoyers and Avon also appear in the top six of the forward lines, which could change throughout the game. In 2022-2023, Desnoyers appeared in four games for the Flyers but never returned from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms since.

“Sometimes you need those types of seasons to realize some stuff. I’ve been working hard on it all summer, and [I’m] just truly excited to get things going. Just my preparation in the summer, [I] try to gain some weight a little bit; I don’t think that was the best idea. [I] just worked hard towards speed more this summer. [I] should be good.” – Elliot Desnoyers; 9/13/2024
