The Philadelphia Flyers hope to end their road trip with a win against their former rivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins. This comes after dropping a close 1-0 game to the Carolina Hurricanes, who rank 2nd in the league in points, and 10th in goals for. Perhaps a close battle like the one they faced two nights ago could be a good prep against a team that ranges closer to the middle of the pack.
The Penguins rank 18th on the power play and 17th on the penalty kill, and when the Flyers rank 32nd on the powerplay and 27th on the penalty kill, just about every other team’s special teams units will be a real threat to your club. Despite not being bad on the power play, the Penguins did go scoreless against the Islanders, going 0-3, and that may have ultimately cost them the game in a 1-goal defeat.
The Flyers are really going to want to stay out of the box as that seemed to have cost them in the end against Carolina, who went 1-4 on the powerplay in a 1-0 defeat. That’s too many to give to any team, but when your penalty kill ranks 27th, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are going to have themselves a day. It’s best to avoid that.
