The Philadelphia Flyers have crossed an RFA off their list in defenseman, Ronnie Attard, as they have agreed on a 2-year, two-way/one-way deal worth $1.7 million, or an $850,000 AAV, according to General Manager Daniel Brière.
Attard will earn $775,000 at the NHL-level in his first year with $175,000 at the AHL-level but is guaranteed $275,000. In his second year, he will earn $925,000 and the contract will become a one-way deal, meaning he will be paid an NHL salary no matter what and he would need to clear waivers to be sent down to the minors.
The 24-year-old ended the 2022-23 season primarily playing for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms as he was a key cog in their playoff push. He ended up appearing in 2 games for the Flyers, but the plan for him was always for more playing time – that was before their miraculous push to the playoffs.
Attard completed his first season in the AHL where he played 68 games, scored 12 goals, and chipped in with 20 helpers. The previous year he signed his ELC with the Flyers after ending his collegiate career with Western Michigan University. In 15 games with the big club in his first taste of professional hockey, Attard quickly impressed and added 2 goals and 4 points.
With Western Michigan, Attard improved exponentially from 14 points in 30 games in his first year to 22 points in 25 games the following year to 13 goals and 36 points in 39 games in 2021-22. He had also spent 3 years with the Tri-City Storm in the USHL prior, racking up 41 goals and 85 points.
With Ivan Provorov gone and Tony DeAngelo to follow suit, Attard will have a great chance at winning a roster spot but needs to impress during training camp with fellow prospects like Egor Zamula and Emil Andrae right behind him, and now veterans like Sean Walker and Marc Staal being in the mix.
Morgan Frost, Noah Cates, Olle Lycksell, and Cam York remain in the hunt for a new contract, but have been tendered qualifying offers.
