Well, the Philadelphia Flyers did not finish their weekend with a back-to-back win like they wanted to as they suffered a 5-0 shutout loss at the hands of the Los Angeles Kings.
The Flyers came off a great victory against the Sabres in Buffalo Friday night, then returned to the Wells Fargo Center Saturday to face off against the Kings on Military Appreciation Night.
The Kings came to Philly with a perfect 5-0 record on the road and arrived in town on Friday night while the Flyers were in Buffalo. With Flyers starting goaltender Carter Hart still listed as day-to-day, the team called up goaltender Cal Petersen from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms and started him in his Flyers debut while the Kings relied on Cam Talbot in between the pipes.
Petersen was drafted in the 2013 draft by the Buffalo Sabres. He signed with L.A. in 2017 as a free agent and spent 5 years with the Kings. Petersen was traded to Philadelphia this past offseason in the deal that sent Ivan Provorov to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
FIRST PERIOD
The Kings opened the scoring in the 1st period when a bouncing puck tipped off of forward Adrian Kempe’s stick and ended up getting past Cal Petersen.
Just 18 seconds later, Kings captain Anže Kopitar scored on a tip-in shot to make the lead 2-0.
Obviously this was not the start that Petersen or the Flyers wanted, but Petersen seemed solid in the cage throughout the rest of the 1st period.
SECOND PERIOD
As the 2nd period got underway, the Flyers stepped up their hitting game against the Kings to get the crowd more involved and turn the momentum. Flyers defenseman Cam York committed a delay of game penalty when he shot the puck over the glass, giving the Kings more offensive momentum with a power play.
Arthur Kaliyev took advantage of the power play by earning his 3rd goal of the season with a wrist shot.
The most painful goal of the game then occurred as Trevor Moore scored his 6th of the season with 16 seconds left in the 2nd period.
THIRD PERIOD
The final nail in the coffin against the Flyers was hammered as Alex Laferriere carried the puck into the offensive zone in a 1-on-2 scenario. Laferriere later passed the puck to Blake Lizotte for the 5th and final goal of the game.
The Flyers were held off the scoreboard in the first shutout of the season. Philadelphia’s special teams excelled at the penalty kill, going 4 for 5 against L.A.’s 16th ranked power play, which went 1-for-5. However, the Flyers could not find the chemistry on the ice during the man advantage as they went 0-for-4 on the power play.
The Los Angeles Kings remain undefeated on the road this season, improving their road record to 6-0-0. Cam Talbot earned his 29th career shutout, and 4th against the Flyers.
Looking ahead, the Flyers will play away from Wells Fargo Center for a 4 game road trip over the next 2 weeks. Hopefully this road trip gives some injured Flyers a chance to recover and reenter the lineup to help the Orange and the Black get back in the win column.
