Flyers Look to Win 6th in a Row on Long Island

(Heather Barry Images, LLC)

The Philadelphia Flyers previously gave the Columbus Blue Jackets their 9th straight loss at the Wells Fargo Center to a 5-2 final. Flyers goals were scored by Joel Farabee (7), Bobby Brink (4) who returned to the lineup after sitting for 3 games, Ryan Poehling (2), Travis Konecny (11), and Cam York (2). Sam Errson stopped 20 of 22 shots, finishing with a .908 SV%.

The Flyers will now take on the New York Islanders tonight to try and extend their win streak to 6. The Islanders are looking to win back-to-back games for the first time since October 26th when they beat the Ottawa Senators, 3-2, and the Columbus Blue Jackets, 2-0. They ended their 7-game losing streak on Saturday, beating Calgary, 5-4, in a shootout. The Islanders are 2-4-3 in the month of November, and comparatively, the Flyers are 6-3-0.

Flyers Rolling on 5-Game Win Streak

The Flyers have been rolling ever since they infamously lost to the previously winless San Jose Sharks . Let’s take a look at some of the teams they’ve beaten: Anaheim Ducks (6-3 final), Los Angeles Kings (4-2 final), Carolina Hurricanes (3-1 final), Vegas Golden Knights (4-3 OT final), Columbus Blue Jackets (5-2 final). Despite a winning streak, the same story has persisted over the special teams in Philadelphia. The penalty kill continues to be the star of the 2, stopping 18 of 21 short-handed opportunities. They had perfect games against Anaheim, Los Angeles, and Carolina. The power play, on the other hand, has been the same, and not in a good way. All in all, the Flyers have ultimately gone 3/16 on their power play, going scoreless in the first 3 games of their win streak. Despite the poor results, the Flyers did score on the power play in their latest back-to-back homestand.

Beating the New York Islanders

Structure and discipline is going to be important tonight. The Islanders barely won their last game in Calgary, which came on the heels of a 7-game losing streak.

Score on the power play. The Islanders have the worst penalty kill in the league. This is just one of those things you have to take care of, even if you’re not the best. Islanders struggle to score as well. 2.53 goals per game, compared to the Flyers’ 3.33 goals per game.  If this team is already struggling on the penalty kill and scoring in general, do not give them the chance to improve. Taking dumb penalties is an easy way to ignite something for the other team.

Carter Hart will be back in net and will cast doubt for the Islanders at UBS Arena tonight.

News and Notes

– Marc Staal will draw back into the lineup after missing 16 games due to an upper-body injury.

– The Flyers have a great opportunity to score on the power play in 3 straight games, against the worst penalty kill unit in the league

– Louie Belpedio is surprisingly the one to sit out on tonight’s game after the online crowds assumed it would be Egor Zamula. Zamula’s play has been very inconsistent as of late, and hopefully Marc Staal can bring some stability to the pairing. It’s important to note that each kid’s development will look different. Tortorella elected Foerster and Zamula to figure it out on the ice in their slump, whereas teammates like Bobby Brink and Morgan Frost have taken turns in the press box.

– The Flyers’ all-time record against the New York Islanders is 144-101-26-18 in 289 contests.
