The Philadelphia Flyers got back in the win column against the New York Islanders in a shootout 1-0 victory at UBS Arena. This game would mark the 2nd time the Flyers and Islanders played in four days.
For the Flyers, they were looking to end a 2-game skid and wrap up their Thanksgiving back-to-back weekend. The Islanders, on the other hand, had won their last 3, including Friday night in a 5-3 victory against the Ottawa Senators. The Islanders entered this game short 2 defenseman after Adam Pelech and Sebastian Aho would be sidelined.
The Flyers also welcomed some lineup changes as Rasmus Ristolainen made his season debut after missing the first 20 games with a lower-body injury, taking Egor Zamula’s spot, and he would be paired with Marc Staal. Morgan Frost reentered the lineup as Bobby Brink came out.
Sam Ersson would get the start in net as Carter Hart started Friday in the Flyers’ loss to the New York Rangers. The Islanders relied on Ilya Sorokin to make his second start against the Flyers this season as he recorded the win in the previous meeting.
FIRST PERIOD
In the opening period, the Islanders would jump out of the gate with energy as they would get the first 4 shots on net. On the other side, it took the Flyers over 5 minutes to record their first shot on goal.
The Islanders would earn the game’s first power play as Ryan Poehling would get caught for tripping Noah Dobson. Fortunately for the Flyers, New York couldn’t set up their power play units.
After the Islanders power play, the Flyers started gaining offensive chances but were stopped by Sorokin. The first period ended with no score but the Flyers got their game together by outshooting the Islanders 12-6.
SECOND PERIOD
During the second period, forward Noah Cates would block a shot with his lower body that left him stunned. This occurred after Cates took a puck to the mouth against the Rangers on Friday that required several stitches.
The Orange and Black’s defense helped assist Sam Ersson secure his second career shutout. Travis Sanheim had a redeeming defensive performance as his forechecking helped break up an offensive chance for the Islanders. Marc Staal even made a diving slide to stop forward Pierre Engvall from passing the puck to a teammate in front of the net as well.
In his season debut, Rasmus Ristolainen would be penalized in the second period for tripping Anders Lee when Lee tripped over Ristolainen’s body after he fell.
The Islanders faced the same problem on their second power play as they couldn’t get set up, going 0-for-2 on the power play.
New York would earn another man advantage in the final seconds of the second period as Sean Walker would get called for high sticking Kyle Palmieri. The Islanders would carry the majority of the power play time into the third period.
THIRD PERIOD
During the power play, Travis Konecny had a shorthanded chance but couldn’t capitalize as his shot went wide. The Islanders’ power play struggles throughout the game continued as they couldn’t take advantage of their third man advantage.
The Flyers would finally get their first power play of the game when Alexander Romanov was called for interference against Tyson Foerster. The Flyers’ power play has been a struggle recently as they went 0-for-6 against the Rangers on Friday.
Philly’s struggles on the man advantage continued as they did not capitalize on the power play, and wouldn’t get another opportunity in this contest.
OVERTIME
The Flyers would need extra time to keep themselves from losing 3 games in a row.
Overtime began with Owen Tippett, Travis Sanheim and Ryan Poehling starting for Philly. The 5 minute overtime was a back-and-forth battle as both teams had offensive chances but once again, both goaltenders had the answers.
SHOOTOUT
This scoreless game would be decided but a shootout, the first of the season for the Flyers. New York sent Bo Horvat, Oliver Wahlstrom, Mathew Barzal, and Kyle Palmieri in the shootout, but Ersson stopped them all.
Cam Atkinson, Sean Couturier, Morgan Frost were sent to shoot for the Flyers but couldn’t get past Sorokin.
Tyson Foerster ended the torture of the scoreless game when he tallied the only goal of the shootout and won the game for the Flyers by a final score of 1-0.

The Flyers will have two days off to prepare for their next matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday at 7:30pm ET (NBCSP).
