Rizzo is coming off a fantastic season with the University of Denver that ended fittingly as they won the National Championship game for the second time in three years. They defeated a vaunted Boston College roster that boasted Cutter Gauthier, Will Smith, Ryan Leonard, and Gabe Perreault.
Rizzo’s season was cut short due to injury but he still amassed 34 and 44 points in just 30 games, finished tied for fifth in scoring in the NCHC, and third on his own club despite missing several weeks. This was his third season with the Pioneers in which he scored 126 points in 107 games between 2021 and 2024.
The Burnaby, British Columbia native has had a decorated NCAA career where was named to the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team twice and was a 2022-23 Hobey Baker Award nominee. He also made All-NCHC First Team in 2022-23, and was a finalist for NCHC Forward of the Year in 2022-23 and for NCHC Rookie of the Year in 2021-22, among a few other accolades.
The Flyers acquired his rights from the Carolina Hurricanes over the summer for the signing rights to David Kaše. It was believed that they were going to initially acquire him for Tony DeAngelo before the NHL ruled against the deal due to alleged cap circumvention.
