Flyers Prospect Profile: Oscar Eklind

(Brynäs IF/X)

Oscar Eklind, 25, led Luleå HF in goal-scoring (17) in his first season with the club. After five seasons in the SHL, the Philadelphia Flyers signed Eklind to a 1yr/$950k entry-level contract on April 8th, 2024.

He is a sizable forward, standing in at 6’4″ and 220lbs. Eklind uses his frame to his advantage, focusing most of his game around the net front. His big frame could be advantageous on the penalty kill. A longshot to make the Flyers’ roster, Eklind is a depth forward (LW) signing.

Eklind was a top free agent from Europe. However, in pursuit of the Le Mat Trophy, the Växjö Lakers swept Luleå HF, 4-0, to stop the SHL Playoff push. In 7GP, including a best-of-three series win over Örebro HK, 2-1, Eklind did not contribute a point.

A dozen days later, Daniel Brière signed Eklind.

On day two of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, Brière set a tone. He selected big forwards to help beef up the offensive front. Jack Berglund (6’3″ and 209lbs), Heikki Ruohonen (6’1″ and 204lbs), and Noah Powell (6’1″ and 201lbs) all fit the bill. Eklind, an LW who thrives net-front due to his size, is a raw talent. His role in Philadelphia, if recalled, will be a fourth-line forward.

Flyers Training Camp begins on September 18th with an off-ice session. September 19th is the first on-ice session, including the dreaded ‘bag skate’ test from John Tortorella. Then, Eklind will begin his development and embark on the Flyers Preseason.

Next season, Eklind will stash as flexible LW/C depth on the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
