Last month, Team Sweden announced their 4 Nations Faceoff roster.
Team Sweden did not include representatives from the Philadelphia Flyers (23-22-6). However, the other nations in the 4 Nations Faceoff did, such as John Tortorella (Team USA), Travis Konecny and Travis Sanheim (Team Canada), and Rasmus Ristolainen (Team Finland).
Filip Gustavsson (Minnesota Wild), Jacob Markström (New Jersey Devils), and Linus Ullmark (Ottawa Senators) made up the trio of goaltenders for Team Sweden. Last Wednesday, Markström (lower body) and Justin Brazeau collided. Markström suffered a sprained MCL with an expected recovery of four to six weeks. The injury removed Markström from the 4 Nations Faceoff.
In need of a third goaltender, Team Sweden called upon the Flyers. Sam Ersson will join the roster as a replacement for Markström.
“I’m happy for all [of] our guys. They will represent Philly and their country. Those situations are really cool for the players. I would like to see my guys get some rest, but playing for your country; that trumps everything.” – John Tortorella; 1/29/2025
Ersson (15-8-2, 2.77GAA, 89.3%SV) is buzzing as of late. In his last ten starts, Ersson is 8-2-0 with a 92.5%SV, a 1.9GAA, and two shutouts. Among all active Swedish goaltenders in the NHL, Ersson is third in wins. When Team Sweden learned Markström would miss the 4 Nations Faceoff, Ersson was a logical replacement.
Tonight, Ersson will start on the road against the New Jersey Devils. His most recent win was Monday at the Wells Fargo Center versus the Devils. Ersson saved 31/33 shots en route to a 4-2 victory.
The last time Ersson represented Sweden was in 2023-2024 at the World Championships. Sweden won the bronze medal.
Watch the 4 Nations Faceoff from February 12th-20th at the Bell Centre in Montréal (2/12-2/15) and the TD Garden in Boston (2/17 and 2/20) on TNT, ESPN, and ABC.
