Philadelphia Flyers forward and captain Claude Giroux was already named as an NHL All-Star for the seventh time in his career. Now, he’ll serve as team captain at the event for the first time in his career.
Washington Capitals forward and original Metropolitan captain Alex Ovechkin was placed in COVID protocols earlier today. As a result, he will not be attending this weekend’s festivities in Las Vegas. Giroux will now don the “C” for his team on Saturday.
Capitals forward Tom Wilson will replace Ovechkin in the competition while Giroux assumes captaincy duties for the weekend.
It is unknown which events Giroux will participate in on Friday but they will be announced in the coming days leading up to the competition. He will then captain his team against the Pacific Divison All-Stars in the beginning of their quest to win $1,000,000 and earn the honor of being NHL All-Star Champions on Saturday.
The Skills Competition will take place on Friday night at 7:30pm ET, and the All-Star Game will take place on Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm ET.
