The Philadelphia Flyers will be without the services of their top defenseman in Cam York for a minimum of two weeks due to an upper-body injury, according to general manager Daniel Brière.
After sending Jett Luchanko back to the Guelph Storm in advance of their 1:00pm ET start against the Minnesota Wild today, the Flyers announced York’s injury and that Erik Johnson would be his lineup replacement – at least for today.
York looked to have sustained the injury near the end of their game against the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night. With about 3 minutes remaining in the third period, York swatted at a puck from below the goal-line and near the end-boards with seconds remaining on the penalty kill.
As he got to the puck, he was finished along the boards by Capitals forward Nic Dowd. York was in a vulnerable position to begin with and it looked like his shoulder was the principle point of contact.
The loss will be tough to swallow considering York’s role in all situations. In 7 games to start the 2024-25 season, the former first-round pick from 2019 has 2 goals and 3 points to go along with 10 blocked shots and 7 hits in 22:56 ATOI. Last year, he tallied a career-high 10 goals and 30 points in a full 82-game campaign an averaged 22:37 TOI.
Travis Sanheim will have to carry the load at the top and players like Jamie Drysdale, Rasmus Ristolainen, and Nick Seeler will have to chip in with extra minutes and perhaps play in more situations.
Being open and transparent about injuries is certainly not the Flyers’ forte, and On Pattison’s Anthony SanFilippo mentions that while it’s stated that York should miss at least 2 weeks, a longer absence is expected and a probable stint on IR is coming as well.
