The Philadelphia Flyers are set to square off against the New York Islanders on Thursday night at UBS Arena in what promises to be a tightly contested battle. Philadelphia’s next seven of eight games will be against Metropolitan Division clubs.
After a hard-fought 3-2 shootout loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday, the Flyers are eager to bounce back and regain their footing in the Metropolitan Division standings. Samuel Ersson gets the nod in net for Philadelphia, while Joel Farabee returns to the lineup after being scratched for the past three games. With playoff aspirations still within reach for both squads, Thursday’s matchup carries significant weight.
The Flyers (19-20-6) come into the game sitting just above the Islanders (17-19-7) in the division standings, separated by three points. For Philadelphia, consistency has been a challenge, as they’ve gone 2-2-1 in their last five games. The team will look to Travis Konecny, their leading scorer with 50 points (20 goals, 30 assists), to continue driving the offense. Rookie Matvei Michkov has also emerged as a crucial contributor with 31 points, including three game-winning goals. Complementing them are players like Owen Tippett and Morgan Frost, who provide depth scoring in key situations.
Farabee’s return to the lineup could provide a spark for the Flyers. The winger, who has six goals and eight assists this season, will aim to rediscover his form after being sidelined as a healthy scratch the past three contests. Head coach John Tortorella emphasized the need for more consistency from Farabee, and tonight’s game offers a chance for the young forward to reestablish his role.
“He [Lycksell] struggled on the wall,” Tortorella said. “It’s going to be a process with him.”
Between the pipes, Ersson (11-7-2, 2.87 GAA, .887 SV%) will start for the Flyers. His solid play has been pivotal in keeping Philadelphia competitive in tight games. However, he faces a formidable challenge in New York’s Ilya Sorokin. The Islanders’ starter has been their backbone, posting a 13-13-4 record with a 2.83 GAA and a .902 save percentage across 30 starts.
The Islanders come into the game following a 2-0 loss to the Ottawa Senators. Despite the setback, they have been competitive in recent outings, winning three of their last five games. Anders Lee leads the Islanders’ offense with 35 points (19 goals, 16 assists), while Bo Horvat and Kyle Palmieri add scoring depth. However, New York’s special teams have been a glaring issue. Their power play is the worst in the league, converting at just 10.5%, while their penalty kill ranks last at 65.6%.
For the Flyers, special teams could play a decisive role. Philadelphia’s power play hasn’t been much better, operating at 16.5% (28th in the NHL), but their penalty kill is slightly more reliable at 78.4% (20th). Winning the special teams battle could tip the scales in what is expected to be a closely fought contest.
This is the first meeting between the Flyers and Islanders this season, with three more matchups scheduled in the month of January. Both teams know the importance of setting the tone early in the season series.
