The Philadelphia Flyers announced earlier today that forward Kevin Hayes will be out week-to-week after suffering a reinjury. The initial injury, a tweak in his groin, required surgery and kept him out of the lineup for the first 12 games of the season.
Hayes reinjured himself on November 16th in the Flyers’ 2-1 overtime victory over the Calgary Flames, a game in which he scored his first goal of the season in emotional fashion. He scored and pointed to the sky in tribute of his late brother Jimmy after the goal.
Hayes originally tweaked something in his groin on September 20th that required abdominal surgery that he underwent on September 21st. His return timetable was six to eight weeks, and Hayes missed all of training camp all the way up until the Flyers’ road matchup against the Dallas Stars on November 13th. Hayes recorded his first point of the season in the game, an assist on the power play on Ivan Provorov’s third period goal in an eventual 5-2 Philadelphia loss.
The timetable isn’t set in stone as far as how many weeks Hayes could miss, but it doesn’t seem like he will miss as much time as before. However, the Flyers will be without their second-line center for another extended amount of time, which really hurts them in the midst of a terrible stretch of inconsistent offense.
The Flyers have been relying heavily on Claude Giroux and Sean Couturier to carry the load offensively. Derick Brassard has played better as of late, and Travis Konecny and Cam Atkinson have been scoring at decent clips as well albeit going cold of recent.
The Flyers’ depth has overall been a massive disappointment though and losing a player like Hayes again sorely hurt’s the team’s scoring output.
