Powell was selected by the Flyers in the fifth round of the 2024 NHL Draft and briefly played at Ohio State University. While with the Buckeyes this season, the 19-year-old recorded 2 goals, 3 assists, and 4 penalty minutes in 17 games.
Prior to being drafted, Powell was scoring at over a point per game for the USHL’s Dubuque Fighting Saints in 2023-24. The Chicago native registered a team-leading 43 goals and 74 points in 61 games in his draft season. His 43 goals also led the entire league.
“He obviously dedicated himself,” said Flyers assistant general manager Brent Flahr at the draft. “His game took a huge step. I think skating is one area that improved, but I think conditioning-wise and everything in his game just went to another level. He brings an element of toughness, he can really shoot the puck, obviously score goals, but he was a presence physically in every game he played.”
Standing at 6’2” and 201 pounds, Powell’s size makes him deceptive to opponents of his offensive abilities. He finds ways to drive into high-danger scoring areas and he displays incredible hockey sense, which was a point of focus for the Flyers at the draft this past year.
Powell’s skating seemed to be his biggest weakness, but it was definitely a major point of improvement entering the draft.
“He’s already improved it significantly now, and it’s obviously something he has to work on, but I think just his conditioning and working at the little things have helped him to this point,” said Flahr. “Now he’s going to have to keep working, but with the package that he brings, it’s hard to find. Where we got him, we thought it was a good value.”
Powell’s impressive 2023-24 season and a strong showing at Development Camp saw him earn an invite to the World Junior Summer Showcase for the United States as well.
Powell will make his OHL debut with Oshawa immediately on Friday night. He will look for more consistency in his game and to keep improving his skating and all-around game with the Generals.
