After five Philadelphia Flyers prospects were named to Team Canada’s roster for the upcoming World Junior Summer Showcase, two others will be joining them on their respective national teams.
Forward Noah Powell will be representing the United States and forward Jack Berglund will be representing Team Sweden.
Powell was drafted in the fifth round by the Flyers in the 2024 NHL Draft and was seen as a steal at 148th overall. He led the USHL in goals with 48 and after his stellar season with the Dubuque Fighting Saints, he will play NCAA hockey at Ohio State this upcoming year.
Flyers assistant general manager Brent Flahr spoke highly of Powell at the draft, saying,
He obviously dedicated himself; his game took a huge step. I think skating is one area that improved, but I think conditioning-wise and everything in his game just went to another level. He brings an element of toughness, he can really shoot the puck, obviously score goals, but he a presence physically in every game he played.” – Brent Flahr; 6/29/2024
As for Berglund, he is a sizable forward at 6’3” and 209 pounds and is a gifted playmaker.
Drafted 51st overall in the second round by Philadelphia, Berglund racked up 15 goals and 19 assists for 34 points in 49 games with the Färjestad BK J20 squad this past season. He also made his SHL debut with the senior team and scored once in eight games at Sweden’s top men’s level.
The tournament will run July 26th to August 3rd and takes place in Plymouth, Michigan. With seven prospects in the tournament and opportunities for roster spots for the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship at stake, Flyers fans will want to keep a close eye on how things pan out.
