The Philadelphia Flyers have probably done two weeks’ worth of conditioning in just two days of training camp, and tonight they’ll get to show if they’re in shape and ready as they take on the Boston Bruins at Wells Fargo Center.
This is the first preseason matchup for both clubs.
The Flyers, coming off a very disappointing 2021-22 season, have been sent through the gauntlet by head coach John Tortorella in the early going of training camp. He has pushed the team to test their mental and physical abilities and to see who will sink or swim as the team enters a crucial juncture in franchise history.
Fans have shown their displeasure with the organization, from ownership to management to coaching, all the way down to the players. There aren’t many expectations – if any – for Philadelphia this year, but an honest effort and perhaps even a victory tonight could be a good start in trying to right the ship this season.
The Bruins, coming off a 107-point season in the daunting Atlantic Division, fell in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals to the Carolina Hurricanes and are hungry to go back and make a deeper run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. With the returns of Patrice Bergeron and David Krejčí, Boston is expected to be deep up the middle and bring a lot of energy and strong, two-way play to the rink every single game.

News and Notes:
– Felix Sandström will get the start in goal for Philadelphia, but he and Troy Grosenick will split the net tonight. Sandström is expected to be Carter Hart’s backup with the Flyers this season and will look to impress and build on a solid 2021-22 season.
– None of the Flyers’ veteran players are suiting up for this game, but they’ll gradually start skating in other games against Buffalo and Washington as the week goes on.
– Ian Laperrière will be serving as head coach for this contest for the Flyers. John Tortorella said that Laperrière will coach the first two games, then assistants Brad Shaw and Rocky Thompson will coach the next two games before he steps behind the bench to finish out the preseason campaign.
– Samuel Ersson is listed on the game roster but will not play unless there is an emergency. He will serve as the third goaltender for Philadelphia tonight.
