Coming off of a 2-0 victory over the Vancouver Canucks to begin the 2023-24 home season, the Philadelphia Flyers host Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers tonight at the Wells Fargo Center to close out a mini-homestand before traveling to Dallas for the weekend.
The Flyers defeated the Canucks via a 25-save shutout by Carter Hart with some special goals to add to the victory. Defenseman Egor Zamula notched his first career NHL goal just two minutes into the game as he sniped a shot from the blue line, beating Vancouver netminder Thatcher Demko. Sean Couturier also found the scoresheet, his first goal in 22 months, on a penalty shot goal which extended the Philadelphia lead to two.
Now three games into the season, the Orange and Black face their toughest opponent yet as Connor McDavid, arguably the NHL’s top player, and the Edmonton Oilers visit the City of Brotherly Love this evening.
For the Flyers, Travis Konecny continues to dominate offensively as the young season continues on. The 26-year-old London, Ontario, native tallied an assist in the win on Tuesday against the Canucks which added to his point totals and his point streak against them. Konecny sits first in points and goals for the Flyers with three goals and two assists for five points in three games. He would have been among the leaders in time on ice in the win last game for he had not received a ten-minute misconduct and a minor penalty for roughing.
As for the Oilers, Leon Draisaitl has started his season off with a bang. The German veteran forward leads the league in points with seven. Draisaitl has been an offensive machine for years and will continue to do so. He tallied two power-play goals in a 6-1 rout of the Nashville Predators on Tuesday. Draisaitl became the Oilers’ all-time leader in power-play goals, scoring his 127th and 128th, passing Hall of Famer Glenn Anderson.
The last time these two met was on February 21, 2023, when the Oilers defeated the Flyers 4-2. Connor McDavid notched two goals and an assist for three points while Noah Cates and Owen Tippett each found the net in the loss. Olle Lycksell registered his first career point on an assist from Tippett’s goal.
