The Philadelphia Flyers have made their first round of cuts in Training Camp, per Flyers General Manager Daniel Brière.

The following players were returned to their junior teams:

#34 Sam Hillebrandt – G (OHL Barrie, released from ATO)

#42 Spencer Gill – D (QMJHL Rimouski)

#62 Josh Zakreski – F (WHL Portland, released from ATO)

#64 Carson Bjarnason – G (WHL Brandon)

#65 Carter Sotheran – D (WHL Portland)

The following players were assigned to the Flyers’ AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms:

#46 Sawyer Boulton – F

#58 Nick Capone – F

#60 Zayde Wisdom – F

#61 Émile Chouinard – D

#67 Sam Sedley – D

#75 Ethan Samson – D

#76 Matteo Mann – D

#83 Matt Miller – F

#92 Alexis Gendron – F

Bjarnason, Gill, and Boulton all appeared in Sunday’s 6-2 victory over Washington in the Flyers’ preseason opener. Bjarnason stopped all 9 shots he faced in relief, Gill blocked 2 shots in 19:19 of ice time, and Boulton played just 6:36 in which he was -1 and recorded an interference penalty.

All the players that were cut, aside from Sotheran, appeared in the Flyers’ Rookie Series against the New York Rangers as well. In Game 1, Gendron scored the Flyers’ first goal on a deflection from a Gill shot, and Gill also made a spectacular defensive play late in the game to eventually help the Flyers force overtime. Bjarnason appeared in both games and played very well. Hillebrandt stopped 22 of 24 shots in relief in the Flyers’ Game 2 win and made some key saves. Mann scored the opening goal of Game 2 while Boulton was very physical and buried the second of Philadelphia’s three goals in the contest off a pass from Wisdom.

44 players remain in Training Camp. The Flyers will be back for on-ice sessions on Wednesday at 11:00am at Flyers Training Center in Voorhees and will play their next preseason game on Thursday at 7:00pm the New York Islanders at Wells Fargo Center.
