Daniel Brière has been a busy bunch since taking over the general managing duties last year and it continued today when the Philadelphia Flyers reportedly extended Owen Tippett to an 8-year extension with a cap hit of $6.2 million per season.

Tippett was set to become a restricted free agent at the end of the season but as Anthony Di Marco intimated a few times this year, both sides were looking at a long-term deal for some time but the Flyers needed to get within the $6 million range to finalize proceedings.
On the season, Tippett has 18 goals and 30 points in 48 games, including 6 goals and 8 points in the last 7 games before being placed on IR with a lower body injury. The offense has hit a snag since he was forced to miss time and it’s not a coincidence that without Tippett, the Flyers look a little listless – and have lost 4 straight contests.
Acquired from the Florida Panthers in the Claude Giroux trade ahead of the 2022 trade deadline, Tippett was finally afforded the freedom, ice-time, and opportunity to play his game. Stuck behind several players on the depth chart in Florida, the former 10th overall pick from the 2017 NHL Entry Draft only played in 94 games across parts of 3 seasons with just 14 goals and 33 points to his name.
He finished the year in Philadelphia with 4 goals and 7 points in 21 games, however since then he has scored 45 goals and 79 points in his last 123 games, including a 27-goal campaign last year. Under John Tortorella, Tippett has thrived with more ice-time, responsibilities, a much larger role, and has proven to be a lethal shooting threat – something the Flyers have lacked for years.
His $6.2 million cap hit for the 2024-25 season will be the second-highest amongst forwards behind just Sean Couturier and third on the club with Travis Sanheim edging him out with his $6.25 million hit. The Flyers were set to have a shade under $19 million to spend in the summer with the increasing salary cap, which afforded them the luxury to extend Tippett however they saw fit.
Ryan Poehling, Egor Zamula, and Carter Hart are the remaining RFAs with Sean Walker, Nick Seeler, and Marc Staal as the pending UFAs.
