Coming to the close of the first day of free agency, Daniel Brière and the Philadelphia Flyers have announced that they have signed forward, Garnet Hathaway to a 2-year deal worth $2.375 million per season.
After having already signed Ryan Poehling and Rhett Gardner earlier in the day, it seemed like Brière was hinting that they would be done for the day but he continues to add depth pieces for the bottom-6.
The 31-year-old forward would be best described as a pest and Flyers fans would have firsthand knowledge of the player from his playing days with the Washington Capitals.
In 26 games against the Flyers he scored 5 goals and 6 assists, which represents the 2nd-most goals, 2nd-most assists, and most points he has recorded against any opponent.
Across 8 seasons in the NHL, Hathaway has played for the Calgary Flames, Washington Capitals, and the Boston Bruins. He was undrafted and signed a minor league deal with the Flames back in 2014, played in 175 games and scored 16 goals and 40 points. Hathaway then signed a 4-year deal in the summer of 2019 with the Capitals, where he scored 38 goals and 76 points in 257 games.
He was traded to the Bruins at the 2023 trade deadline in a package that included Dmitry Orlov, where he scored 4 goals and 6 points in 25 games.
Hathaway has also played in 31 career playoff games, with 3 goals, 6 points, and 128 hits to his credit.
Hathaway has 490 career penalty minutes, 1,346 hits, 320 blocked shots, and has averaged 11:35 of TOI. He is coming off a season where he scored 13 goals and 22 points in 84 games – split with Washington and Boston- was a plus-5, averaged 11:48 TOI, recorded 268 hits with 83 blocked shots, and accumulated 69 PIMs.
It’s not an overly exciting signing off the face of it, but he will provide a lot of toughness, feistiness, energy, and has 27 goals over the last 2 seasons to go with everything else. Paired up with Nicolas Deslauriers on the fourth line will provide a lot of dropped gloves, banged up bodies, and John Tortorella-energy that should bring back some buzz within the confines of the Wells Fargo Center.
