Daniel Brière has made his first free agent signing during the free agent frenzy in former Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins forward, Ryan Poehling.
The former first round pick from the 2017 NHL Entry Draft has played parts of 4 seasons in the NHL, 3 with Montreal and his most recent being with Pittsburgh. The deal is reported to be 1-year and worth $1.4 million.
Poehling burst onto the scene with a hat-trick and the shootout winner in the final game of the 2018-19 season against the Toronto Maple Leafs – incidentally his NHL debut. He then scored 2 points in 27 games in 2019-20 and 17 points in 57 games in 2021-22. He was traded to Pittsburgh alongside Jeff Petry for Mike Matheson and a fourth-round pick and scored 7 goals and 14 points in 53 games. In 138 NHL games, Poehling has 20 goals and 36 points.
He spent his junior years with St. Cloud State where he scored 7 goals and 13 points in 2016-17, then he tallied 14 goals and 31 points in 36 games, before finishing things off with 8 goals and 31 points in 36 games in 2018-19. While playing for Laval Rockets of the AHL, Poehling scored 19 goals and 44 points across 3 seasons in 71 games, including 11 goals and 25 points in 28 games in 2020-21.
It’s the exact type of move that the Flyers were going to be making this year, looking for depth pieces and players for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Poehling is a former first round pick and can be seen as a reclamation project of sorts, but hopefully turns out better than the Kieffer Bellows experiment for this past season.
Poehling will have his chance to win a roster spot out of training camp, but the Phantoms won’t be a bad pit stop either as he looks to regain his former first round value.
Poehling was drafted 25th overall in 2017, which was 1 pick ahead of Jake Oettinger and 2 ahead of Morgan Frost.
