General manager Daniel Brière has announced that the Philadelphia Flyers have signed defenseman, Victor Mete, on a 1-year, 2-way deal worth $775,000 at the NHL-level, $450,000 at the AHL-level, but a guaranteed $500,000.
The 7-year NHL veteran has spent his playing career with the Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, and most recently with the Toronto Maple Leafs after kicking things off in the junior circuit with the London Knights. Drafted in the 4th round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, Mete has 245 games under his belt with 5 goals and 45 points.
He suffered a few lengthy stints on the injured list while with the Canadiens as he broke his finger in 2017-18 and suffered a season-ending foot injury in 2019-20. Mete also went through a franchise record 127 game goalless drought that was snapped in the 2019-20 season.
He was placed on waivers in 2021 and claimed by the Senators, who wound up extending him to a 1-year contract but chose not to tender a qualifying offer at the end of the season in 2021-22. He scored 1 goal and 9 points across 51 games in parts of 2 seasons in the nation’s capital.
On the second day of free agency in 2022, Mete signed with his hometown Maple Leafs, who ended up placing him on waivers as well before the season started. He went unclaimed and wound up playing 6 games with the Toronto Marlies and 11 games with the Maple Leafs but had his season cut short due to a lower-body injury.
Mete adds to the depth that Briere has added this summer in Ryan Poehling, Rhett Gardner, Garnet Hathaway, and Marc Staal. He shouldn’t be seen as an NHL defenseman with so many names clustered around his on the depth chart, but with a strong training camp, anything can happen. Otherwise he should be seen as a good piece on the back end for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
