Before the Philadelphia Flyers (21-20-6) go back-to-back in New York, they host the Detroit Red Wings (21-21-4) at 7:00pm/ET.

Both teams secured a home win versus each other in December. At the Wells Fargo Center, the trend from this season sides with the Flyers.

Six days separated the first two games against the Red Wings in December. Each team is still in the hunt for an Eastern Conference Wildcard. Just over a month later, tonight’s winner takes the season series.

Tonight, Philadelphia (-142) is favored, per DraftKings Sportsbook. John Tortorella has his team checking well, winning faceoffs, and scoring. The Flyers are superior to Detroit on the penalty kill, at the faceoff dot, and scoring goals. Limiting the powerplay opportunities for the Red Wings could go a long way toward a home and season win.

When: 1/21/25; 7:00pm/ET
Where: Wells Fargo Center; Philadelphia, PA
Broadcast Info: NBC Sports Philadelphia; 93.3 WMMR

Philadelphia Flyers

Sam Ersson (13-7-2; 88.9%SV, 2.79GAA) will start. He remained engaged against the New Jersey Devils, stopping 12/13 shots on goal. Typically, goaltenders struggle when they face such a low volume. Rasmus Ristolainen and Nick Seeler helped the cause, each blocking five shots.

Ersson lost in Detroit, 6-4. Ivan Fedotov will be the backup goaltender.

“I’ve never had a problem with Ers [Ersson] as far as assessing himself. He wore it. When he was struggling, he wore it all day long. [It’s] good to see him. Feds [Fedotov] is giving us some good games. If we get that solidified, we go about our business and we find a way to get points.” – John Tortorella; 1/20/2025

Jamie Drysdale (-14, 19:19TOI, 51BLK, 6HIT, 11TK:35GV, 55.1%FF) blocked three shots in New Jersey. In the loss to the Red Wings, Drysdale notched an assist. Drysdale (1G, 3A, 17:38TOI, +3, 8BLK, 2TK:2GV) is the best defenseman iced by Philadelphia in this points streak.

Joel Farabee (6G, 10A, 15:16TOI, 51.6%CF) remains around the puck. He generated scoring chances on the rush and generated rebounds for his teammates. Since returning to the lineup against the New York Islanders, Farabee looks like an efficient checking forward. In two games, Farabee is +3 with a couple of assists, a pair of hits, and a puck protection ratio of 3TK:1GV. Like Drysdale, Farabee tallied an assist in Detroit earlier this season.

Rodrigo Ābols will make his NHL debut.

“I got a call yesterday in the morning. [I] was sleeping in the bed and then got a call. It was one way to make an off day even better, coming off a bit of a tough stretch with a lot of games. It’s definitely very inspiring, and I’m looking forward to it.” – Rodrigo Ābols; 1/20/2025
