Preview: Flyers visit league-best Jets, try to stay afloat in Wild Card race

After a gut-wrenching overtime loss on Thursday, the Philadelphia Flyers (26-26-8) head north of the border to take on the Winnipeg Jets (42-15-3) at Canada Life Centre.

This is the first meeting of the season between the Flyers and Jets. Philadelphia swept the 2023-24 season series, including a 2-0 shutout victory in Winnipeg on January 13th, 2024.

When: 3/1/2025; 7:00pm ET
Where: Canada Life Centre; Winnipeg, MB
Broadcast Info: NBCSP; Flyers Radio 24/7
Last Game PHI: 2/27/2025; 5-4 OTL; at Pittsburgh Penguins
Last Game WPG: 2/27/2025; 2-1 L; at Nashville Predators

Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers suffered a 5-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in their last outing despite holding a 3-0 lead at one point. Matvei Michkov recorded two goals and one assist to extend his point streak to three games.

The loss pushed Philadelphia to six points behind the final Wild Card berth in the Eastern Conference and they have five(!) teams to leapfrog before they even touch Columbus, who owns that last spot.

The game also saw Garnet Hathaway woozily leave the ice after a dirty hit from Boko Imama. Imama received a minor penalty after review and no supplemental discipline from the NHL while Hathaway did return to the game. Hathaway has been a crucial contributor in Philadelphia’s bottom-six and penalty kill all season long and he has been ruled out for tonight’s contest with an upper-body injury.

Nicolas Deslauriers will draw into the lineup for the first time since February 8th in his place.

Ivan Fedotov will also jump back into action after a lengthy hiatus. Fedotov last started on February 6th in a 4-3 loss to the Washington Capitals, making 14 saves. He carries a 4-8-3 record, .877 SV%, and 3.26 GAA into tonight and will be looking for his first victory since November 29th.

Winnipeg Jets

The Jets are atop the NHL standings with 87 points and a 42-15-3 record. Winnipeg recently saw an 11-game winning streak get snapped but they’ll look to rebound quickly. They are third in the league in goals per game (3.53), first in fewest goals allowed per game (2.35), and power play percentage (30.9).

Winger Kyle Connor leads the Jets in assists (42) and points (73), and center Mark Scheifele leads them in goals (33). Scheifele also leads all active Jets in assists (14) and points (19) against the Flyers, while Connor leads all active Jets in goals (6) against the Flyers.

The story of the Jets, however, is goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. The Michigan native is well on his way to a second straight Vezina Trophy and could even find himself in the Hart Trophy conversation at the rate he’s playing. Among NHL goalies with at least 25 games played, Hellebuyck leads in wins (36), SV% (.926), GAA (2.02), and shutouts (6). Should Hellebuyck lead those categories at the end of the season, he’d be the fifth goalie to ever lead all four and the first to do since the Flyers’ Bob Froese in 1985-86.

Hellebuyck will start tonight, and he’ll be sure to give the Flyers all they can handle in goal.
