Forwards Scott Laughton and Travis Konecny will serve as alternate captains.
“It’s such a great honor. It’s a really prestigious organization so this makes it even more special. This city is my home and I love it here,” said Couturier in a statement. “It’s going to be business as usual for me. Nothing is really going to change from me or my game and how I approach things. I love my teammates, how we have grown as a group and I want to make sure we keep going on the right path here.”
“Sean Couturier is an ideal choice to be the next leader of the Philadelphia Flyers,” said Flyers general manager Daniel Brière. “Sean was drafted here and has made Philadelphia his home. I have personally seen his development from a responsible forward to one of the best two-way centermen in the game and a playoff performer.
”The adversity he has had to overcome has only strengthened his proven leadership. In this New Era of Orange with Dan Hilferty, Keith Jones and John Tortorella at the helm, we couldn’t be more proud to call him captain.”
Couturier is the first Flyers captain since March 19th, 2022 when Claude Giroux was traded to the Florida Panthers – a span of 697 days.
Couturier had previously served as an alternate captain from 2018-19 to 2021-22 before John Tortorella’s first season as head coach. The 31-year-old and 2020 Frank J. Selke Trophy winner ranks fifth in Flyers history games played (771) and has recorded 191 goals and 302 assists for 493 points to accompany a +89 rating, 397 blocked shots, 577 hits, and a 52.2 faceoff percentage since being drafted by the franchise with the eighth overall pick in the 2011 NHL Draft.
In 2023-24, Couturier has racked up 11 goals and 22 assists for 33 points along with a +7 rating and has won 53.1% of his faceoffs after missing almost two full seasons with lingering back injuries.
As for Laughton, he will continue donning an “A” on his sweater as he has since last season. For Konecny, this is his first time wearing a letter and serving in a leadership role at the NHL level.
