What is Danny Brière cooking?
After the Philadelphia Flyers traded away Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee, the rest of that night was spent figuring out the return. The return was confusing and did not make much sense based on the Flyers roster. The Flyers currently have a roster built from the outside in on their forward group. The best players up front are their wings (Travis Konecny, Matvei Michkov, Owen Tippett). They also were thin at center depth in the first place, making it even more of a head scratcher that the return for a trade that involved the Flyers sending away a center included getting two left wings back. The center depth is now Sean Couturier, Noah Cates, Ryan Poehling, and most likely Scott Laughton. That is a BAD center group.

There is a LOT of noise surrounding the Vancouver Canucks. For what it’s worth, the Canucks seem to be still shopping Elias Pettersson and have traded J.T. Miller to the Rangers amid rumors about his future with the team. The Flyers have a lot of ammo in the upcoming draft (7 picks in the first two rounds) and a commitment to fully shaking up the roster. I don’t think a more perfect situation has presented itself to the Flyers to go out and trade for a true first line center to play with Michkov.

Andrei Kuzmenko is on his way to Philadelphia. Kuzmenko is a 28 year old UFA who had a no-trade clause and waived it to come to a team that is closer to James Hagens than Lord Stanley. Yes, he is Russian and played with Michkov before, but his play style is the exact opposite of how John Tortorella runs his team. Elliotte Friedman has come out and said Michkov was one reason Kuzmenko waived his NTC, but Brière and Keith Jones personally convinced Kuzmenko that there would be a good reason to come to Philadelphia.

Craig Button came out with even more information on TSN saying “The Flyers have cleared some space to do bigger things, whether it be now to make a trade & add some players or when it’s summer. They had enough time to evaluate their team. The exodus of Frost & Farabee is setting them up to do other things.”
What is Danny Brière cooking?
Brière is officially under the microscope. For the first time since taking the job he’s blown up the core in a way that shocked the fanbase. Ivan Provorov’s trade seemed to be the writing on the wall, and even though this one feels the same way, the return tells the story more. Like when Brière made sure to add a goalie in the Provorov traded because of the Team Canada situation, he made sure Kuzmenko was a player they brought back for a reason. With Brière, trades always seem to be deeper than just the the players we see on the surface.
