The Philadelphia Flyers have sent two more players to the chopping block in training camp, waiving forwards Zack MacEwen and Cooper Marody. If both players clear, they will be assigned to the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

MacEwen’s waiving comes as a bit of a surprise. After being claimed off waivers from Vancouver last year by Philadelphia, the 26-year-old forward skated in 75 games for the Flyers, posting 3 goals and 6 assists for 9 points to accompany a whopping 110 penalty minutes.
Everything but his goal total were career-highs for MacEwen in the NHL, and he originally figured to be a tough customer that would skate again on a nightly basis for the Flyers despite the club’s signing of Nicolas Deslauriers. Both players could have formed a very physical and aggressive duo on the fourth line.
MacEwen will likely have some suitors in the pecking order of the waiver wire, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see him with a different team tomorrow, though 23-man rosters are due tomorrow as well, so he could slip through to the AHL with teams trying to stay cap complaint and not go over roster limits.
Cooper Marody’s waiving was more expected. Originally drafted by the Flyers in the sixth round of the 2015 NHL Draft, Marody’s rights were traded from Philadelphia to the Edmonton Oilers on March 21st, 2018.
He proceeded to sign his entry-level contract with the Oilers after leaving the University of Michigan and spent the bulk of his time in the organization with the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors. Marody also played in seven games for Edmonton, registering one assist in his lone 2021-22 Oilers appearance for his first career NHL point.
Marody signed a two-year deal with Philadelphia in the summer and will likely end up with the Phantoms. The 25-year-old Brighton, Michigan native has racked up 67 goals and and 108 assists for 175 points in 182 AHL contests and will be a top player in Lehigh Valley for Ian Laperrière’s squad.
