Philadelphia Flyers forward Garnet Hathaway was nominated as the team’s representative for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy.

The King Clancy Memorial is awarded annually to the “player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and who has made a significant humanitarian contribution to his community.”

The winner of the award will be chosen by NHL executives, the commissioner himself, as well as former King Clancy winners. Whoever is chosen as the winner will also receive a $25,000 donation to the charity of their choosing.

On top of that, the winner of the award will be able to elect that his team receive a grant from the NHL of up to $20,000 for a humanitarian cause.

CEO and Chairman of Comcast Spectacor and Governor of the Flyers, Dan Hilferty, was quoted after the nomination was made official:

“Since Garnet’s arrival to Philadelphia, his impact on our team, our fans, and across the community has been infectious. What he and his wife Lindsay have done over the past two seasons for our local community, specifically the first responders’ community, has been truly admirable and the entire organization is extremely proud to call them members of the Flyers family.”

As for Hathaway, the veteran is more than honoured for the nomination and being the representative for the Flyers in 2024-25:

“It’s an incredible honor to be recognized for this award, but the real reward comes from the connections Lindsay and I have made with first responders and their families. Their sacrifices and dedication inspire me every day, and through Hath’s Heroes, I hope to continue supporting and giving back to those who serve our community. I’m grateful for the Flyers organization, my teammates, and the incredible fans who have supported these efforts.”

Hathaway was a surprising signing late on the opening day of free agent frenzy in the summer of 2023. With the Flyers setting a path for a rebuild, the veteran signed to play a key role in the bottom-6 and has since signed a two-year extension that has him under contract until the end of the 2026-27 season.

In 65 games this season, Hathaway has put up 10 goals and 21 points to go along with a +6, 58 PIM, and 242 hits across 11:53 ATOI. He recorded 17 points and 132 PIM in 82 games last season to go along with 326 hits in his first season with the organization.

While his on-ice play speaks for itself, what he’s done off the ice deserves a lot more recognition as well. Alongside his wife, Lindsay, they founded ‘Hath’s Heroes’ in 2019 as a way to honour first responders, which is something near and dear to Hathaway as he was inspired by his great-grandfather, Garnet Melroy.

He has invited and hosted first responders and their families at Flyers games this year with a meet-and-greet postgame with the rest of the team. They are on track to raising over $30,000 this year through fundraisers and general outreach programs. Hathaway also partnered with Flyers Charities and presented a $200,000 check in support of the rebuilding of a local ball hockey rink.

No Flyer has ever won the King Clancy and Scott Laughton was the Flyers’ nominee in 2021-22, 2022-23, and 2023-24. Hathaway is also the second Flyer in as many weeks to be nominated for an NHL award after goaltender Ivan Fedotov was named the team’s representative for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.
