Flyers look for season series victory over rival Rangers

(Heather Cattai/Heather Barry Images, LLC)

The Philadelphia Flyers (31-37-9) take on the New York Rangers (36-34-7) in their third and final meeting of the season.

The Flyers have finally been eliminated from playoff contention after Saturday’s 3-2 loss to the Montréal Canadiens at Bell Centre. It also marked the first loss of the Brad Shaw era for the Flyers, who now stand at 3-1-0 since John Tortorella was fired as head coach. A Philadelphia win tonight would push the Rangers to the brink of elimination in the Eastern Conference as the Canadiens occupy the final Wild Card spot by an 8-point margin.

The last time these two teams faced off, the Rangers cruised to a 6-1 victory on January 23rd in Manhattan. In their first meeting, the Flyers won on Black Friday by a score of 3-1 at Wells Fargo Center.

Philadelphia Flyers

Aleksei Kolosov will start in goal tonight for the Flyers. This will be his first professional start since March 22nd with the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms in a 3-1 loss to the Providence Bruins. He made 22 saves in that contest. His last NHL start came back on January 2nd in Vegas, allowing 4 goals on 26 shots to the Golden Knights in a 5-2 loss.

Matvei Michkov saw his career-best six-game point streak come to an end on Saturday. He had racked up 4 goals and 7 assists during his streak and moved himself back into the rookie lead in goals (24). Michkov has yet to record a point against the Rangers this season but will look to change that tonight.

Travis Konecny leads all Flyers this season in goals (2) and points (3) against the Rangers and will try to build on that tonight. The Flyers’ leading scorer is currently on a four-game point streak in which he’s racked up 6 assists and will try to keep things going in the right direction tonight. Konecny will look for his first goal since March 23rd – a span of six games.

Ryan Poehling is also on a roll for the Flyers. He is on a three-game point streak in which he’s racked up 4 goals and 2 assists. He also has 5 goals in his last 5 games. The former first-round pick has stepped up lately and now has a career-high in goals (12), and he is also now just one point away (27) from tying his career-high in points (28).
